Broncos sweep Mustangs in 2019 home opener

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State softball team played their first home contest of the 2019 season Thursday, hosting SUNY Delhi, but the Mustangs fell in doubleheader action by final scores of 6-4 and 12-1.

 

THE BASICS

Game 1:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • After giving up three runs in the top of the first inning, the Mustangs came out of the gates firing. Junior, Savannah Hobbie (South Kortright, NY) got things started with a single to center field, and then advanced to second base after Chyne Kennedy (Southwold, Ontario) singled to right field. Emily Vesely (Johnson City, NY) followed with the third Mustang hit of the inning, singling up the middle, scoring Hobbie and allowing Kennedy to advance to second base.
  • Freshman, Paige Williams followed with her first hit of the afternoon with a single to right field, scoring Kennedy to cut the Bronco lead to one.
  • Delhi would score a fourth run in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead over the hosts. But the Mustangs evened the score in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs on three hits. Kennedy shot a single up the first base line, scoring Ciera Sprague (Elmira, NY) and Mackenzie Lawrence (Greene, NY) for a 4-4 tie heading into the sixth.
  • The Mustangs were able to generate hits but fell short scoring runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Delhi scored a run in each of the two innings to run away with the 6-4 victory.
  • Kennedy threw all 7.0 innings in the loss, allowing six runs on six hits, striking out five.
  • After two scoreless innings, Delhi picked up five runs in the third inning, starting with a grand slam from Bronco, Sierra Keesler. The Mustangs responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the third; Kennedy grounded out to second base, but not before Sprague could advance home to put Morrisville on the scoreboard, with a 5-1 score heading into the fourth.
  • The Bronco's would go on to score seven unanswered runs to secure the 12-1 victory in fiving innings. Sprague let the Mustangs in the second of the day's action, recording three hits on three at-bats, scoring one run.
  • Kellina Murphy (Yonkers, NY) threw the loss, allowing twelve runs on fifteen hits, and striking out one.

 

WHAT'S NEXT

Morrisville State will hit the road and head south for their North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener, taking on host, St. Elizabeth on Saturday afternoon. Games are slated to start at 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
