MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Visiting Lancaster Bible College earned the doubleheader sweep over host, Morrisville State softball, collecting the 12-4 and 6-1 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) wins on Saturday afternoon. The losses drop the Mustangs  to 1-21 on the season, 1-7 in conference play

Game 1:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Chargers took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Morrisville State responded with a run of their own to end the inning. Ciera Sprague (Elmira, NY) scored off a single from Chyne Kennedy (Southwold, Ontario) to even the score at 1-1 going into the second.
  • The Mustangs strung together a 4-hit inning in the second to take a 3-1 advantage. After two straight singles from Skyler Girard (Cherry Valley, NY) and Kellina Murphy (Yonkers, NY), Sprague reached first on a fielder's choice, allowing Girard to advance to third. Savannah Hobbie (South Kortright, NY) stepped up to the plate and knocked in both runs with a single of her own.
  • Lancaster Bible held the Mustangs scoreless for the next three innings and scored nine runs of their own throughout the third and fifth innings to take a 10-3 lead going into the sixth. Morrisville would respond with another run; Hobbie ripped a double to score Sprague, but it wasn't enough for the hosts as the Chargers would score one additional run to end the game with a 12-4 victory.
  • In game one, the Mustangs recorded ten hits in thirty-three at-bats, with four RBI's; Hobbie was responsible for three of the four runs batted in.
  • Murphy threw the loss for Morrisville State, pitching all 7.0 innings and allowing ten earned runs on nine hits. She posted four strikeouts, three of which came in the second inning.
  • The Mustangs extended game two to eight innings, but the visitors scored five unanswered runs in the top of the eighth for the sweep.
  • Lancaster Bible took the early 1-0 lead in the first. The Mustangs had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the first; with Sprague in scoring position at third, Emily Vesely (Johnson City, NY) ripped a shot to center-right field, but the Charger's center fielder reached for the fly out to end the inning.
  • Both teams would remain scoreless between the second and sixth innings. Morrisville posted their first and only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Sprague scored on a ground-out to shortstop from Vesely to even the score at 1-1.
  • The Chargers recorded five runs on five hits in the eighth inning to earn the 6-1 win.
  • Kennedy pitched 7.1 innings on the mound in the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits, striking out eight.

 

WHAT'S NEXT

Morrisville State will host Penn-St. Berks Sunday afternoon in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader. Games are slated to start at 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
