AURORA, N.Y. – Freshman Alexis Campbell (Buffalo, N.Y.) rattled off 12 of her game total 27 points in overtime Saturday, leading visiting Morrisville State College women's basketball to the 92-88 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) win over host Wells College in Aurora.
With the win, Morrisville State ups their conference record to 11-4 to complete the series sweep, while posting a 13-10 overall record. Wells falls to 7-7 in NEAC play, 8-15 overall to date on the season.
Campbell went 12-for-14 from the free throw line and added seven assists to her tallies on the day, while three additional teammates notched double figures to contribute to the win, including senior center Marissa Woodard (Unadilla, N.Y.) who posted her fifth double-double of the season behind 19 points and 13 rebounds. Seven of her boards came on the offensive glass as the Mustangs edged the Express 46-45 in rebounds on the afternoon. Woodard also added four steals.
Haley Kilmartin (Fort Plain, N.Y.) registered 17 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists, while teammate Tori Rockefeller (Bloomville, N.Y.) added 15, hitting three from beyond the arc.
Campbell, who was kept scoreless in the opening half, notched 11 in the third quarter to lead the Mustangs to a seven point advantage, 54-47, after three frames.
Morrisville State held an eight point lead over the hosts until the 2:55 mark when Carley Ryan drained a three to make it a five point ball game.
Woodard followed with a bucket of her own, but Ryan countered to convert a three-point play, and in a matter of seconds nailed a second tre to cut the deficit to one with 1:40 to go.
Ryan struck again on the ensuing Wells possession, a fast break layup, to give the hosts a one point lead, but Woodard was fouled under the hoop after gathering the offensive rebound and sent to the free throw line where she converted the first of two.
Campbell hit two free throws with 33 ticks to go in regulation for a one-point lead for the Mustangs, but Kamarie Maturine hit the front end of two with 15 seconds left to tie the contest for a 10th time and send the game into the overtime period.
Seconds into the extra frame, Campbell nailed one from the outside to regain the lead for the Mustangs, and later added a fast break layup to extend the lead to five just a minute in.
After Wells cut the deficit down to one, back-to-back buckets by Kilmartin regained a three point lead for Morrisville State with under two to go, but the Express once again was able to bring the visitor lead down to one with just over a minute to play.
It was from there that the Mustangs were able to win the game from the free throw line, hitting 7-of-8 to maintain their advantage and collect the thrilling victory, six of which came off the hand of Campbell.
Morrisville State returns to the court Tuesday, traveling to Cazenovia College for a 7 p.m. Route 20 rival rematch.
