MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – In a historic day for both squads, the Morrisville State Women's Ice Hockey team proved victorious as they posted a 5-0 win over host Salem State in both teams' first Colonial Hockey Conference competition.
The first period saw both teams trading shots and both goalies stepping up to the task as neither team was able to net a goal. However, that would all change five minutes into the second period when Kali Rutka (Anchorage, Alaska) found Stephanie Strymecki (Kelowna, British Columbia) who deposited the puck from the top of the crease.
The Mustangs extended their lead to 2-0 late in the second period when Kelley Graham (Mississauga, Ontario) netted Strymecki's initial shot that was deflected by the Viking's goalie. Kristen Iattarelli (Kinnelon, N.J.) also picked up an assist on the play.
The third period was all Morrisville as the Mustangs netted three goals in the final period. The first goal of the period came as Rutka, Strymecki, and Graham combined again; this time it was Rutka who put the puck away during a flurry of action in front of the Viking's net.
Megan Kirk (Breezy Point, N.Y.) drilled a one-timer to the top shelf of the net for an unassisted goal, and the 4-0 lead. Bailey Dillabough (Massena, N.Y.) picked up the final tally for the Mustangs with two minutes left in the game. Kanekaroroks McComber (Kahnawake, Quebec) and Maria deWilde (Caistorville, Ontario) notched assists on Dillabough's goal.
Renee Schmaltz (Beaumont, Alberta) turned away 13 Vikings' shots for the shutout and her first career win.
Morrisville will face off against the Salem State Vikings tomorrow afternoon at 2 PM as they round out their season series. The Mustangs will remain on the road next weekend at SUNY Canton for their CHC series, but will return home on Friday, November 20 against Daniel Webster. The first faceoff is scheduled for 7 PM.
