Mustang Women Fall to Herons, 3-1

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women's Ice Hockey team returned to the ice for the first time in 2016 on Tuesday evening and dropped a 3-1 decision against the Herons from William Smith College.

It took nearly all of the first period for both teams to shake the holiday break rust off as both the Mustangs and Herons played their first games in nearly a month.  William Smith found a way to get on top first as Rebecca Begley broke through the Mustang defense for an unassisted breakaway goal with 3:35 left in the first period.

Morrisville continued to attack the net themselves, but did not find the back of the net until fifty seconds into the second period.  Stephanie Strymecki (Kelowna, British Columbia) sliced her way through the William Smith back line and slid the puck just inside the left post to tie the match up at 1 goal apiece.  The goal was Strymecki's eighth of the year.

The Herons responded quickly, scoring in the 17th and 15th minutes of the second period to extend their lead to 3-1.  Despite equaling William Smith's shot attempts in the second period, the Mustangs were not able to punch anything through.

Neither team would find the back of the net in the third, though both teams had plenty of opportunities.  The Herons killed two Morrisville power play opportunities, while the Mustangs killed three William Smith power play opportunities.

Morrisville will stay on their home ice for their next two games as they host non-conference opponent, Chatham College on Friday, January 8 at 7 PM and Saturday, January 9 at 1 PM.
