MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Morrisville State women's ice hockey ended their recent slide and captured a 6-0 victory over Johnson & Wales on Friday night.
The Mustangs outshot the Wildcats 16-5 in the first period, but were unable to capitalize. The Wildcats had two power play chances early, but were unable to find the back of the net.
The Mustangs opened up the scoring in the second period, when Stephanie Strymecki (Kelowna, British Columbia) found the back of the net in the 10th minute off an assist by Ciara Lark (Mildmay, Ontario). Less than a minute later in the period, Megan Kirk (Breezy Point, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal to push the lead to 2-0.
The Mustangs would tack on another goal with less than 7 minutes remaining in the first period, when Maria deWilde (Caistorville, Ontario) scored off an assist from Kaitlyn Schlake (Nampa, Idaho). Kanekaroroks McComber (Kahnawake, Quebec) also picked up an assist on the play.
Less than a minute into the third period, Morrisville would score their fourth goal when Kirk scored off an assist from Kimberly Hughes (Lloydminster, Alberta). McComber would push the score to 5-0 with a one-timer off an assist from Kali Rutka (Anchorage, Alaska).
The Mustangs would finish out their scoring in the third period when Rutka put one in the back of the net with less than a minute remaining in the period. Strymecki and Lark picked up assists on the play.
The Mustangs' goalie Renee Schmaltz (Beaumont, Alaska) made 13 saves to preserve the shutout.
The Mustangs will finish up their Colonial Hockey Conference regular season at Johnson & Wales tomorrow afternoon. The first faceoff is set for 4:20 p.m.
