Strymecki nets hat trick, leads Morrisville to first playoff win over Johnson & Wales 7-0

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Mustangs collected their first post-season win Saturday afternoon, as they topped visiting Johnson & Wales University 7-0 in the Colonial Hockey Conference (CHC) quarterfinal action in Morrisville.

Morrisville State (8-11-3) will advance to play either Stevenson (13-0-1) or Endicott (11-1-2) depending on how the games finish up. These games will be played on Stevenson's home ice on March 6.

Johnson & Wales ends their season with a 4-22-0 overall record.

Morrisville dominated the shots of goal in the first period, 21-0, which lead to four goals for the home side. The Mustangs opened up the scoring, just two minutes into the first period, when Kaitlyn Schlake (Nampa, Idaho) scored on a one-timer off an assist from Kim Hughes (Lloydminster, Alberta). Just four minutes later, Maria deWilde (Caistorville, Ontario) punched in the second goal off a pass from Megan Kirk (Breezy Point, New York).

Less than a minute later, Stephanie Strymecki put home a rebound off of a shot by Kali Rutka (Anchorage, Alaska). Rutka and Kelley Graham (Mississauga, Ontario) picked up assists on the play.  Morrisville would finish out their scoring in the first period when Strymecki scored her second goal of the game with a rebounded shot off of a deflection. Ciara Lark (Mildmay, Ontario) picked up an assist on the play.

A 15-4 shots on goal advantage for the Mustangs in the second period lead to their fifth goal of the day, when Kanekaroroks McComber (Kahnawake, Quebec) went top shelf off a pass from Lark.

McComber would add a second goal, eight minutes into the third period, to push the lead to 6-0 in favor of the Mustangs. Hughes and deWIlde both picked up assists on the play. Morrisville would finish up their scoring, just three minutes later, when Strymecki finished up her hat trick with a wrap around shot from behind the goal. Schlake picked up an assist on the play. The Mustangs would kill a Wildcats power play with two minutes remaining to preserve the shutout.

The Mustangs will return to the ice for the Colonial Hockey Conference semifinals on March 5. Additional information about the semifinal at Stevenson University will be released when announced.
