Morrisville Women Dominate Nichols 9-0 in Season Opener

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women's Ice Hockey team wasted little time getting on the scoreboard for their 2016-2017 campaign, posting a 9-0 win against Nichols in the Buffalo State Tournament.

It took just under five minutes for the Mustangs to get the goal horn sounding as Maria deWilde (Caistorville, Ontario) converted on a power play goal.  Kaitlyn Schlake (Nampa, Idaho) assisted on the play, her first of three on the afternoon.

Vanessa Klimpke (Winnipeg, Manitoba) recorded her first collegiate goal at the 17:01 mark in the first period.  Kanekaroroks McComber (Kahnawake, Quebec) and Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, British Columbia) picked up the assists.

Carrying a 2-0 lead heading into the second period, Morrisville picked up the pace scoring three more times.  deWilde picked up her second goal of the game, while Taylor Finnie (Kamloops, British Columbia) and Kylie Cameron (Burlington, Ontario) each picked up their first collegiate goals.

The third period turned into the Stephanie Strymecki (Kelowna, British Columbia) show. The sophomore, who led Morrisville in goals a season ago, converted on three of her four shot attempts in the period.  The hat-trick is the third in Strymecki's young career as a Mustang.

Not to be outdone, McComber the senior captain of the squad, picked up her first goal of the season at the 14:25 mark in the third period.

While the Mustangs dominated the game offensively, out shooting Nichols 61-5, Renee Schmaltz (Beaumont, Alberta) was steady between the pipes.  Schmaltz stopped all five shots she faced for the seventh shutout win of her career.

Morrisville returns to the ice tomorrow afternoon at 1 PM to face off against Plymouth State in the second day of the tournament.
