MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women's Ice Hockey team continued to pour on goals and limit opponent scoring on Friday evening as they handed the Kangaroos from SUNY Canton, their first loss of the year by a score of 4-1.
It did not take long for the Mustangs to score, as they converted on a power play opportunity at the 3:54 mark in the first period. Kaitlyn Schlake (Nampa, Idaho) took a pass from Renee Stevenson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) just in front of the crease, flipping it past the Roos goalie for her first goal of the season.
Morrisville clung to their 1-0 lead through the rest of the first period and just over eleven minutes into the second before they would strike again. Ciara Lark (Mildmay, Ontario) tallied her first score of the season on transition as the rest of her teammates were headed to the Morrisville bench for a line change. Hoping to give her teammates some time, Lark wristed a shot just over the blue line that found its way into the upper left corner of the goal.
Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, British Columbia) extended the Mustangs lead over the Kangaroos with a shot off of a pass from Alicia Eamon (Williamstown, Ontario), giving Morrisville the 3-0 lead going into the third period.
SUNY Canton held the Mustangs scoreless for much of the third period, but Megan Kirk's (Breezy Point, N.Y.) unassisted goal at 16:01 gave the Mustangs a 4-0 lead.
The Kangaroos eventually got themselves on the board at the 18:23 mark with a goal by Jessica Pele, assisted by Margret Troiano.
The 4-1 win moves the Mustangs to 5-0 on the season and 3-0 in the Colonial Hockey Conference, while Canton drops to 2-1 and 0-1 in the Colonial Hockey Conference.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon at 2 PM in the IcePlex on the campus of Morrisville State for the final game of their conference series.
