Three Score Third Pushes Mustangs Past Pilgrims

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women's Ice Hockey team turned in another dominant performance on Sunday afternoon, defeating the New England College Pilgrims on the road, 4-1.

The now 9-0 Mustangs found themselves in a fairly unusual position on Sunday, going scoreless for the first period. Morrisville put 19 shots on goal, but New England College's Ashley Castriotta turned away everyone.

Kaitlyn Schlake (Nampa, Idaho) turned things around with her third goal of the season, just over six and a half minutes into the second period.  Kylie Cameron (Burlington, Ontario) tallied the assist, her sixth of the year.

The Morrisville lead was short lived as the Pilgrims got themselves on the board with an unassisted goal from Erica Lissner, bringing the score to 1-1.  Both teams had their chances throughout the rest of the second, as both teams put pressure on each other's goal tenders.

The visiting Mustangs turned it up in the third and the veterans took over.  Stephanie Strymecki (Kelowna, British Columbia) put away what would eventually be the game winner on a power play goal at the 2:53 mark in the third period.  Fellow returners, Megan Kirk (Breezy Point, N.Y.) and Ciara Lark (Mildmay, Ontario) assisted on the goal.

Despite the 2-1 lead, the Mustangs continued to go to work in the third.  Schlake netted her second goal of the game and fourth of the season to extend the lead to 3-1 at the 7:45 mark.  Renee Stevenson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) collected her team leading 9th assist on the play.

Stevenson then added a goal of her own a little over three minutes later to cap the scoring for Morrisville and securing their 4-1 victory.

Renee Schmaltz (Beaumont, Alberta) continued to be a wall between the pipes for Morrisville, collecting 21 saves for her 9th win.

The Mustangs return to their home ice at 4 PM on Friday, December 2 for the first game of their Friday/Saturday home and away series against Utica College.  The Mustangs and the Pioneers will be wearing their commemorative jerseys created by coaches and staff at Utica College which are currently being auctioned off as a part of Utica's annual Gold Ribbon Game which will take place on Saturday, December 3 at 2 PM.  Proceeds from the auction will go to the "Save of the Day" Foundation.  Friends, family and fans can bid on the jerseys throughout this week by clicking HERE or during the game Saturday.
