MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women's Ice Hockey team returned to the win column on Tuesday night, defeating the visiting Bears from SUNY Potsdam 2-1.
The Mustangs, who lost two straight coming into the non-conference tilt, wasted little time in getting on the board. Renee Stevenson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) slipped a pass up from the Morrisville blue line to the waiting stick of Vanessa Klimpke (Winnipeg, Manitoba) with one Potsdam player and the goalie to beat. Klimpke skated to the middle, just outside the crease, and lifted a backhand flip for the goal just 33 seconds into play. Stevenson was credited with the assist.
However, that's all the scoring that would take place until 31 seconds into the 3rd period. Unfortunately for the home team, it was the Bears who picked up a breakaway goal off of the stick off Jaci Morr who nailed the one timer past the Mustang's goaltender, Renee Schmaltz (Beaumont, Alberta).
Eight more minutes went by with both teams trading shots on goal before Klimpke put Morrisville up 2-1 at the 8:27 mark. Alicia Eamon (Williamstown, Ontario) and Taylor Finnie (Kamloops, British Columbia) notched the assists.
SUNY Potsdam did not go quietly and forced the Mustangs to play six skaters on four for the last minute and fifteen seconds. The Bears took advantage of a Morrisville body checking penalty and combined that with a pulled goaltender for the two skater advantage. Morrisville's defense stayed strong and weathered the late storm for the 2-1 victory.
Schmaltz recorded 18 saves on the evening, bringing her season win/loss record to 10-2-0.
The Mustangs will build on this victory as they head into their mid-season break. Morrisville will return to the ice in 2017 on Friday, January 6 as they travel to Cortland State for a 2 PM contest. The Red Dragons will then travel to the Mustangs' home ice on Saturday, January 7 for another 2 PM game.
