Mustangs Start 2017 with 4-1 Win at Cortland behind Klimpke’s Hat trick

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women's Ice Hockey team made the most of their first game in 2017, defeating the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons on the road by a score of 4-1.

The Mustangs got off to a slow start offensively, showing signs of a month-long layoff from competition, as they skated to a 0-0 draw in the opening period.  However, Vanessa Klimpke (Winnipeg, Manitoba) changed that for the visiting Mustangs scoring her team-leading 13th goal of the season at the 7:43 mark.  Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, British Columbia) and Kanekaroroks McComber (Kahnawake, Quebec) tallied their first assists in the new year.

Eight minutes later in the second period, Megan Kirk (Breezy Point, N.Y.) put Morrisville up 2-0.  Maria deWilde (Caistorville, Ontario) and Kylie Cameron (Burlington, Ontario) were credited with the assists on the play.

Cortland was able to put the Mustangs on their heels early in the third period as they cut the Morrisville lead to 2-1 just 57 seconds in.  At that point, Klimpke took over, scoring her second and third goals of the game.  The first of her two third period goals was credited as unassisted at the 3:04 mark, while the second was assisted by Cameron and Kaitlyn Schlake (Nampa, Idaho) at the 6:05 mark.

Klimpke's hat-trick puts her on top of the NCAA Division III leaderboard in goals scored with 15.

Renee Schmaltz recorded her eleventh win of the season, while tallying 18 saves and only allowing the one goal.

Both the Red Dragons and the Mustangs will meet again tomorrow afternoon as they face off on Morrisville's home ice at 2 PM.
