MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women's Ice Hockey team continued their momentum from yesterday into this afternoon's contest, coming away with a 5-1 non-conference victory over visiting SUNY Cortland.
Unlike yesterday afternoon, the Mustangs found the net early, scoring two goals in the first period for the 2-0 advantage going into the first intermission. Vanessa Klimpke struck first at the 7:40 mark for her 16th goal of the season. Kanekaroroks McComber (Kahnawake, Quebec) and Kaitlyn Schlake (Nampa, Idaho) picked up the assists
The second goal off the first period for Morrisville came from Schlake who slid the puck past the Red Dragons' goaltender from the near post. Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, British Columbia) and Stephanie Strymecki (Kelowna, British Columbia) were credited with the assists.
The Mustangs continued to pound the net in the second period. Alicia Eamon (Williamstown, Ontario) tallied her first goal of the season just 51 seconds into the second frame to extend the lead to 3-0. Ciara Lark (Mildmay, Ontario) and Strymecki assisted on the play.
Klimpke continued to add to her goal total, scoring on a breakaway in the 14th minute of the second period. A Cortland slap shot from the point was blocked by Taylor Finnie (Kamloops, British Columbia) and the deflection found its way to Klimpke who was able to break through the Red Dragons' back line.
Morrisville hit a drought in the third period before Maria deWilde (Caistorville, Ontario) tallied her fifth goal of the season at the 13:36 mark off of a pass from Shlake.
Unfortunately, the Mustangs could not pull out the shut out, giving up a late power play goal at the 17:52 mark, bringing the final score to 5-1 in favor of Morrisville.
Morrisville will hit the road this week, traveling to Sacred Heart for a two-game non-conference series. The first is a 4:00 PM start on Tuesday, January 10, followed by a 2:00 PM start on Wednesday, January 11. The Mustangs will look to pick up their first win against the Division I Independent team after losing and tying during last season's series at home.
