Morrisville Women Take Down Sacred Heart 3-2 in Overtime Thriller

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women's Ice Hockey team extended their win streak to four games on Tuesday night, defeating Division I Independent, Sacred Heart University 3-2 in an overtime thriller.

Morrisville was the first team to strike when senior captain Kanekaroroks McComber (Kahnawake, Quebec) gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead at the 9:37 mark in the first period.  Ciara Lark (Mildmay, Ontario) tallied the assist.

Despite being outshot for the game, the Mustangs were able to hold the Pioneers at bay throughout the rest of the first period and over halfway through the second.  Vanessa Klimpke (Winnipeg, Manitoba) continued to add to her goal total, giving Morrisville a 2-0 lead with just over seven minutes left in the second period.

However, penalties started to get the best of Morrisville as Sacred Heart took advantage of a power play opportunity less than a minute after the Mustangs took the 2-0 advantage. The Pioneers cut the lead in half at the 13:26 mark.

The Mustangs managed to cling to their 2-1 lead for the rest of the second period, and over halfway through the third.  That is until the Pioneers capitalized again on a Morrisville penalty, tying the game at 2-2 with a power play goal at the 12:25 mark in the third period.

Neither team would be able to break the tie in regulation, sending the game into a five-minute overtime period.

Both teams struggled to get offense going in overtime, producing only three shots combined.  Luckily for the Mustangs, it was Jessica Ujcik's (Munich, Germany) unassisted tally with thirteen seconds left that would prove to be the difference maker, giving Morrisville the 3-2 victory.

Renee Schmaltz (Beaumont, Alberta) continued to be a difference maker between the pipes for the Mustangs as she recorded 36 saves, her second highest save total for the season.

The Mustangs will savor the victory, but only briefly as they return to the ice at 2 PM on Wednesday afternoon to take on the Pioneers in the second game of the series.
