MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women's Ice Hockey team continued to impress in 2017, rolling to their fifth straight victory on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Pioneers from Sacred Heart University 2-1 on the road.
Less than 24 hours after a last second overtime win against the Pioneers, the Mustangs found themselves fighting from behind by the end of the first period. Sacred Heart took the early lead with five seconds remaining in the opening period, capitalizing on a 5 v 3 power play advantage.
The score would not change through the entire second period as the Mustangs struggled to mount an offense. However, tough defense and stellar goal tending by Renee Schmaltz (Beaumont, Alberta) kept Morrisville within striking distance.
Morrisville's diligence paid off as Jessica Ujcik (Munich, Germany), knotted the game up at 1-1 just over a minute into the third period. Three minutes and forty seconds later, Claire Newman (Burlington, Ontario) put the Mustangs up 2-1 with an unassisted strike. Sacred Heart continued to pour on shots in the third, but the Mustangs stood firm to secure the 2-1 non-conference victory.
The Mustangs will return to their home ice for one more non-conference contest against Hamilton College on Tuesday, January 17 before returning to Colonial Hockey Conference action. The puck is set to drop at 7 PM in the Ice Plex.
