MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women's Ice Hockey team dropped a heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon, falling in the final seconds overtime 2-1 at Stevenson University.
Stevenson and Morrisville skated to a 0-0 tie in the first period, nearly equaling each other shot for shot throughout the first twenty minutes of the game.
Unfortunately, a cross checking penalty on Morrisville gave Stevenson an opportunity just over four minutes into the second period to get on the board first. The host Mustangs did just that off of the stick of Chelsea Blackburn for the 1-0 advantage.
Morrisville State though, was granted an opportunity to equalize midway through the second period when Stevenson was called for an elbowing penalty at the 10:22 mark. The visiting Mustangs worked the puck around to the point where Ciara Lark (Mildmay, Ontario) centered the puck to Kaitlyn Schlake (Nampa, Idaho). Schlake then found a cutting Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, British Columbia) who ripped a shot right in front of the net. Stevenson's net minder blocked the shot, but Kanekaroroks McComber (Kahnawake, Quebec) was there to collect the rebound and finish top shelf.
Most of the third period played out like the first period, but this time Morrisville State began to take an advantage in shots on goal. The visitors received a chance to go ahead at the 16:43 mark in the third when the host Mustangs were whistled for an interference penalty. However, the Mustangs were unable to convert the power play opportunity.
Morrisville returned the favor at the 18:45 mark when they put Stevenson on a power play opportunity with a checking penalty for the last 1:15 of the game. The visiting Mustangs were able to withstand the threat, pushing the game into overtime.
Forty five seconds of power play remained for Stevenson in the overtime frame but Morrisville was able to kill the penalty. Both teams traded shots for the next four minutes, but it was Stevenson who would eventually pull out the win when they put away a rebound with 6.9 seconds remaining in the game.
Morrisville State will wrap up their regular season next weekend at home as they host Johnson and Wales. Friday night's game will start at 7 PM, while Saturday's contest will take place at 2 PM.
