Stevenson Leads Mustangs Past Wildcats in Regular Season Finale

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women's Ice Hockey team bounced back from Friday night's 4-0 loss to beat the Johnson and Wales Wildcats 2-0.

Similar to the night before, the Mustangs controlled the puck for nearly the entire first period, tallying 17 shots on goal while only giving up three.  However, finding the back of the net proved to be tough as once again, the Wildcats' Julia Aberg game up big.

Things evened out for both squads in the second period, but it was Morrisville's persistence at the net that would prevail.  Renee Stevenson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) banged home a rebound at the 7:31 mark to put the Mustangs up 1-0.  Jessica Ujcik (Munich, Germany) and Vanessa Klimpke (Winnipeg, Manitoba) tallied the assists.

Following the second period goal, the Mustangs were forced into penalty kill mode as they had to weather three Wildcat penalties in the back half of period.

Morrisville was able to pick up a much needed insurance goal at the 4:23 mark in the third when they converted on a power play opportunity.  Stevenson found the back of the net again off of a pass from Klimpke for the 2-0 advantage.

Renee Schmaltz (Beaumont, Alberta) recorded her eighth shutout of the season, recording 12 saves.

The win puts the Mustangs at 8-4 in the Colonial Hockey Conference (CHC) while the Wildcats fall to 4-8.  Seeding for the upcoming CHC tournament will be announced on Sunday.
