MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women's Ice Hockey team closed out their opening weekend series with the Bengals from Buffalo State with a 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon.
The Mustangs who struggled to find the back of the net last night, asserted themselves quickly on Saturday afternoon. Alexziz Giannamore (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up the rebound from Jessica Ujcik's (Munich, Germany) bullet shot from the left faceoff circle to find the back of the net for the early 1-0 advantage.
After several power play opportunities and scoring chances, it was an even-handed strike late in the first period that would give Morrisville a 2-goal lead. Mackenzie Lombardi (Hamilton, Ont.) picked up her first collegiate goal at the 18:52 mark. Chyne Kennedy (Southwold, Ont.) set up the play with a slap shot from the left, just inside the blue line. Kennedy's shot would be denied, but Maria deWilde (Caistorville, Ont.) collected the puck in front of the net, pushing a pass to Lombardi to get the Bengals' net-minder out of position.
Buffalo State cut the Morrisville lead in half at the 8:21 mark in the second period on a breakaway, but that is all they would get as solid defense carried the Mustangs the rest of the way.
Karoline Arvik (Trondheim, Norway) collected 23 save, eight of which came in the third period to preserve her second win in net in as many chances on the young season.
The reigning Colonial Hockey Conference champions will begin defending their crown next weekend as they hit the road for their first conference series of the season. The Mustangs will take on the Wildcats from Johnson and Wales University on Friday, November 3 and Saturday, November 4. The puck is set to drop in Rhode Island at 5:55 PM on Friday and 3:55 PM on Saturday.
