MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women's Ice Hockey team opened their Colonial Hockey Conference slate with a 2-1 road win against the Wildcats from Johnson and Wales University.
The Mustangs and Wildcats skated to a 0-0 tie throughout the first period despite outshooting the home squad 13-6.
Morrisville continued to dominate in the second period and their efforts paid off just under four minutes in. Alexziz Giannamore (Pittsburgh, Pa.) gave the Mustangs the 1-0 advantage on an evenhanded goal, putting away a rebound off of Ts'setkwu Dunstan's (Kamloops, B.C.) initial shot. Dunstan was credited with the assist.
The Mustangs kept up their offensive pressure for the remainder of the second period. Giannamore gave the visitors another boost late in the second as she and line-mates Shanley Austin (Rochester, N.Y.) and Jessica Ujcik (Munich, Germany) took advantage of a Wildcats' interference penalty.
Morrisville worked the puck around JWU's short-handed defense looking for an opening. Austin slipped a pass in front of the net to a cutting Giannamore for the power play goal and the 2-0 lead. In addition to Austin's assist, Ujcik also picked up an assist on the play.
Johnson and Wales was able to cut the lead and half late in the third period when they scored at the 17:36 mark. In a last ditch effort to tie the game, the Wildcats pulled their goalie, but Morrisville's defense stood firm despite facing an extra skater for the 48 seconds of the game to walk away with the 2-1 victory.
Karoline Arvik (Trondheim, Norway) collected 12 saves to earn the win in goal for the Mustangs.
Morrisville will hit the ice again tomorrow at 3:55 PM for the second game of their opening CHC series against Johnson and Wales.
