CLINTON, N.Y. – Morrisville State College freshman forward Shanley Austin (Rochester, N.Y.) posted the lone score in a 1-0 non-conference decision Tuesday afternoon on the road, as the Mustangs handed #10 USCHO ranked Hamilton College (2-1-0) their first loss of the season.
The upset boosts Morrisville State to 6-2-1 overall to date on the season.
Morrisville State slammed the hosts with a 14-5 shot advantage in the opening quarter, but struggled to get one past the Continentals goaltender, Sam Walther, who kept the visitors off the board. Walther finished with 33 saves in the loss.
Maintaining momentum in the second, Morrisville State continued to make a push at the Hamilton net, and finally broke through at 6:28 as Austin deflected the the loose puck off a Hamilton defender into the net for the game's lone tally.
Alexziz Giannamore (Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded the assist after the initial push of the puck towards the net.
Hamilton made an attempt to equalize the score in the third as they outshot the Mustangs 12-9, but netminder Karoline Aarvik (Trondheim, Norway) saved the shutout and secured the win turning away all Continental scoring attempts. Aarvik collected 25 saves in the victory between the pipes.
Morrisville State returns to the ice Friday, hosting Concordia University (WI) for a post-Thanksgiving double that wraps up Saturday. Friday's face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. on the Mustangs home ice.
