BEVERLY, Mass. – Visiting Morrisville State College women's hockey set the tone early Friday night as they bested host Endicott College 3-1 in a battle of the Colonial Hockey Conference (CHC) top two teams, who were also undefeated, in Beverly, Mass.
The win moves Morrisville State into the top spot in the CHC standings with a 7-0-2 conference record, while Endicott drops its first conference outing to fall to 8-1-2 in the CHC, 17-3-2 overall.
Three Mustangs registered goals on the night, including Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, British Columbia) who posted the first of the night at the 15:39 mark in the opening period on a scrum in front of net. Taylor Finnie (Kamloops, British Columbia) was credited with the assist.
Devlin added an assist on the second Mustang score at the 7:09 mark in the second period, as she and defenseman Kimberly Hughes (Lloydminster, Alberta) connected with Maria deWilde (Caistorville, Ontario) for the 2-0 Morrisville State lead.
Endicott was finally able to break through the wall of Morrisville State net minder Karoline Aarvik (Trondheim, Norway) midway through the third to cut the deficit to one, as Maggie Layo one-timed the feed from the point on the left post.
Late in the third, defenseman Claire Newman (Burlington, Ontario) lost her footing and slipped to the ice, but was able to rifle the puck through traffic, regaining the two goal visitor lead. Alexziz Giannamore (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won the faceoff and chipped it out to Newman just inside the blue line to collect the assist. Giannamore finished with 13 wins at the center dot, with deWilde adding 12 more as Morrisville State edged the Gulls 29-25 in face-offs.
Endicott put up a fierce six skater attack in the closing minutes, but Aarvik turned away three in the final minute to preserve the win. Aarvik finished with 43 stops in net, including 18 in the opening period as the Gulls held the 44-21 advantage in shots on the night.
Morrisville State will meet Endicott for a second time tomorrow at 3:30 in Beverly, for the second of the weekend's conference action.
