Late Second Period Goal All Mustangs Need to Edge Bison 1-0

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women's Ice Hockey team dominated the Nichols College Bison offensively on Saturday afternoon, outshooting the visitors 33-14, but the only difference was a second period tally by the Mustangs to give the home squad the 1-0 lead in their regular season finale.

The Mustangs held their Colonial Hockey Conference (CHC) opponent to just one shot in the first period, while tallying 11 of their own.  However, the Bison's Cassandra Goyette came up big at every opportunity, keeping Morrisville out of the back of the net.

The second period was much of the same for the Mustangs as they outshot Nichols 9-4, but an end of the period strike by Alexziz Giannamore (Pittsburgh, Pa.) put Morrisville on the board.  Claire Newman (Burlington, Ont.) set up the goal with a slap shot from the right.  The shot was denied, but it took a long deflection to the stick of Maria deWilde (Caistorville, Ont.) who found Giannamore streaking across the crease.  The goal was Giannamore's twelfth of the season, while deWilde's assist was her tenth and the third of the season for Newman.

The Mustangs got into a little penalty trouble in the third, going into the box at the 4:24 mark and the 15:03 mark, but the penalty kill units held the Bison to just 5 shots on net.

Nichols tried to put together one more surge, periodically pulling their net minder for the last three minutes of the contest, but it was not enough as Morrisville held on for the 1-0 victory.

The Mustangs will now turn their attention to the CHC playoffs.  The reigning conference champions are currently sitting in the top position and will await the official seeding from the conference office.  Information regarding the CHC tournament will be released as it becomes available.
