Mustangs Advance, Defeat Salve Regina 6-1 in CHC Quarterfinal

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Mustangs started off their quest to defend their Colonial Hockey Conference title on Saturday afternoon with a convincing 6-1 win over the visiting Seahawks from Salve Regina.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW 

  • Mackenzie Lombardi (Hamilton, Ont.) put the Mustangs on the board with an evenhanded goal at the 3:37 mark in the first period with assists from Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, B.C.) and Maria deWilde (Caistorville, Ont.).
  • Morrisville who struggled on the power play a week ago, took advantage of their first opportunity on Saturday as Alexziz Giannamore (Pittsburgh, Pa.) found the back of the net at the 10:50 mark for the 2-0 advantage.  Devlin and Kylie Cameron (Burlington, Ont.) were credited with the assists.
  • The Seahawks responded quickly cutting the Morrisville lead down to just one with a goal at the 12:03 mark in the first period.
  • Up just 2-1, Morrisville put their offense into high gear, scoring four unanswered goals, three of which were in the second period.
  • deWilde tacked on another power play goal for the Mustangs at 7:37 in the second.  Her goal was followed up by a one timer from the blue line off of the stick of Kaitlyn Schlake (Nampa, Idaho) at 10:50.  Tessa Dobson (Moose Factory, Ont.) rounded out Morrisville's second period scoring at 17:25.
  • Morrisville was able to cap their victory off with a goal in the final minute of play as Danielle Bunting (Thornville, Ohio) notched her fourth goal of the season to give the Mustangs the 6-1 final score.
  • Karoline Arvik (Trondheim, Norway) saved eight in the victory in net for the Mustangs. 

WHAT'S NEXT 

The Mustangs will hit the road next weekend for the CHC Frozen Four hosted by #1 Seed Endicott.  Semifinal game times are slated for Saturday, March 2 with Endicott hosting the winner of the other quarterfinal match up between SUNY Canton and the University of New England at 1 PM and Morrisville squaring off against the #2 Seed Nichols at 4 PM.  The final is set for Sunday, March 3 at 2 PM.
