OSWEGO, N.Y. – Morrisville State College women's lacrosse opened the 2018 season campaign Saturday afternoon, falling on the road at SUNY Oswego by a 18-7 final score as the Lakers collected nine goals in each half of action.

The Mustangs had five net tallies on the day, including Chelsea McNeal (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Courtney Cavellier (Rodman, N.Y.) who each collected two.

Senior Gianna Branca (Camillus, N.Y.) recorded four points, posting a score while assisting three others, as teammates Melissa Lucciola (Monroe, N.Y.) and Celia Abbott (Shortsville, N.Y.) each posted a tally.

Sara Gelster (Hamburg, N.Y.) recorded seven saves in the loss, appearing in net for 45 minutes of action before being replaced by Marissa Woodard (Unadilla, N.Y.) for the final 15. Woodard turned away two in her time between the pipes.

Alexis Firkins (Brockport, N.Y.) caused four turnovers for the Mustang defensive unit and added a team high nine ground balls to her tallies on the day.

Oswego posted two scores early on for the early lead, before McNeal collected the first for Morrisville State on a free position shot. The hosts struck twice within a minutes time for a 4-1 advantage, but Cavellier put home the feed from Branca to cut the Laker lead to two.

Branca added one of her own midway through the half, before Lucciola posted her first collegiate score, but Oswego maintained their distance and carried the 9-4 lead into the halftime break.

In the second, both teams exchanged scores early on, but Oswego rallied for seven straight for a 12 goal lead, before the Mustangs notched their final score of the day on an Abbott free position goal.

Oswego held the 31-10 advantage in shots on goal on the day, and edged the Mustangs 23-20 in ground balls. They were dominate in the center circle, though, outgaining Morrisville State 18-7 in draw controls with Abbott leading the way with three for the Mustangs.
