MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Host Morrisville State College women's lacrosse outscored visiting Fredonia 8-2 in the second half Tuesday evening as they captured a 17-11 non-conference victory over the Blue Devils on Drake Field in Morrisville.
The win is the second straight for the Mustangs, who improve to 2-6 on the season. Fredonia falls to 0-5.
Morrisville State was led by the trio of Courtney Cavellier (Rodman, N.Y.), Melissa Lucciola (Monroe, N.Y.) and Jillian Hughes (Brookfield, N.Y.) who each posted five scores, while teammate Gianna Branca (Camillus, N.Y.) notched the final two, while dishing out five assists.
Marissa Woodard (Unadilla, N.Y.) made five saves in the win for the hosts between the pipes.
Branca added five draw controls to her tallies, while Cavellier collected five ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers.
Lexi Firkins (Brockport, N.Y.) collected a team high six ground balls to lead the Mustangs in the win in the ground ball battle, 28-22, adding four caused turnovers, two interceptions.
Both teams battled back and forth throughout the opening half of action, with Morrisville State holding the slight 9-7 lead until back to back scores by the Blue Devils made it a tied ball game at the break.
An early Fredonia tally gave them the lead for the first time of the evening, netting the unassisted score just over two minutes in, but Morrisville State responded with eight straight goals, including four from Lucciola, to widen the gap to a 17-10 host lead.
Fredonia capped off the evening with a final tally at the 1:08 mark.
Alli Coon led the Blue Devil efforts with seven goals. Casey Villagomez rounded out the scoring for Fredonia with four tallies, while Nicole Burrows posted the loss despite saving eight.
Morrisville State returns to the field next Tuesday, traveling to SUNY Canton for a 4 p.m. non-conference matchup.
