AURORA, N.Y. – Visiting Morrisville State College women's lacrosse had eight collect goals Saturday afternoon as they ran past host Wells College Express by a 21-5 final in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action in Aurora.
The decision keeps the Mustangs undefeated in conference play, improving to 4-0 and pulling even overall at 6-6, as they return to the field tomorrow, playing against longtime rival Keuka College in a 1 p.m. start in Keuka.
Gianna Branca (Camillus, N.Y.) led all scorers on the day with five goals, assisting one, with three of her tallies coming in the first half of play.
Chelsea McNeal (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Celia Abbott (Shortsville, N.Y.) each collected four goals and an assist, while fellow attack Jillian Hughes (Brookfield, N.Y.) added a five point day behind her two goals and three assists.
Morrisville State outshot the hosts 40-18, and had the advantage in ground balls, 19-13, four pickups from Hughes and another three from Lexi Firkins (Brockport, N.Y.) who also caused three turnovers on the defensive end for the Mustangs.
Marissa Woodard (Unadilla, N.Y.) registered the win, saving six in 57 minutes of play, before Sara Gelster (Hamburg, N.Y.) closed out the contest for the final three.
Morrisville State held a 2-1 lead in the opening five minutes of play, with tallies coming from Branca and a free position from Brianna DelColle (Huntington, N.Y.), before they rattled off four straight to claim a 6-1 lead midway through the half.
After a Wells tally to cut the lead to four, Morrisville State responded with 11 straight goals to widen the gap to 14, and didn't look back as they added four additional goals to their lead to capture the 21-5 victory.
