Morrisville State women bow out of NCAA tourney  

 

GETTYSBURG, PA – The Morrisville State College women's lacrosse team made their second straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament Saturday, and despite putting up a good fight, fell to Westfield State University by a 17-12 final score in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Morrisville State ends the season at 12-8 overall.

Gianna Branca (Camillus, N.Y.) led the Mustang efforts with nine points, netting four goals and assisting five others, while Jillian Hughes (Brookfield, N.Y.) and Courtney Cavellier (Rodman, N.Y.) each collected three goals apiece.

Chelsea McNeal (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Brianna Delcolle (Huntington, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring with one goal each.

Marissa Woodard (Unadilla, N.Y.) recorded the loss, saving one in five minutes of play, before fellow senior Kallie George (Tully, N.Y.) appeared for the final 55 minutes, making 11 stops.

Both teams battled back and forth throughout the first half until a three goal run by Westfield State put them ahead by a four goal margin, 11-7, that carried into the halftime period.

Morrisville State was able to close the gap to four late in the second half after the Owls increased their lead to six, but a final strike by Westfield regained a five goal lead and sealed the win.
