Morrisville State women cruise to win in NEAC opener, 22-2 over Abington  

 

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Senior Courtney Cavellier (Rodman, N.Y.) collected nine points to go along with seven ground balls and six draw controls to lead the host Morrisville State women's lacrosse team to a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) win over visiting Penn State Abington by a final 22-2 Saturday afternoon in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Seven different Mustangs, led by the senior class, collected scores Saturday afternoon as they opened the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) schedule with a 22-2 victory over visiting Penn St. Abington on Drake Field.
  • The Mustangs senior trio recorded a combined 14 goals and seven assists on the day, led by Courtney Cavellier (Rodman, N.Y.) with seven goals, as she added two assists for nine points, while collecting six ground balls, seven draw controls and four caused turnovers across the afternoon.
  • Fellow senior Jillian Hughes (Brookfield, N.Y.) added five goals and three ground balls and Celia Abbott (Shortsville, N.Y.) recorded two scores, while assisting a game high five. Abbott also picked up a team best seven ground balls.
  • Freshman Grace Hanehan (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) had a terrific outing for the Mustangs, netting four and assisting one for five points.
  • Kadi Bice (Lorraine, N.Y.) collected five stops in the win between the pipes, boosting the Mustangs to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in NEAC play.
  • Abington's lone scores of the contest came in the first half of action off the stick of Kiera O'Keeffee, who put the Nittany Lions on the board with the tally from Alynn Phelan midway through the first. She added a second, unassisted at the 5:16 mark.
  • Morrisville State ripped off the first five goals of the afternoon before Abington got on the board, then added another five to increase their lead to nine.
  • In the closing five minutes of the opening half, the Mustangs offensive unit couldn't be stopped as they collected four more goals, including one from Melissa Lucciola (Monroe, N.Y.) to send the game into the half with a 14-2 lead.
  • It was all Morrisville State in the second half, who kept up the offensive pressure and added eight more goals to their lead, en route to the 22-2 conference win.
  • Morrisville State dominated the Nittany Lions in shots, 48-8, and held the 14-11 advantage in draw control wins. They also nearly doubled up the visitors in ground balls, 42-24, while causing trouble to Abington on the clear in the transition game, forcing 20 turnovers (38 game total).

  • Morrisville State returns to the field for the second of the weekend's action, hosting Lancaster Bible College at noon tomorrow on Drake Field.
