Morrisville State women make statement, hand Keuka first loss of season while remaining unbeaten in NEAC play

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The Morrisville State women's lacrosse team made a statement Thursday evening as they handed host Keuka College a 20-3 loss, ending their win streak at 11 and handing the Wolves their first loss of the year, behind senior Courtney Cavellier's (Rodman, N.Y.) season high nine points.

THE BASICS:

  • Final Score: Morrisville State 20, Keuka 3
  • Location: Keuka Park, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville State 10-4, 7-0 NEAC; Keuka College 11-1, 5-1 NEAC

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Senior midfielder Courtney Cavellier (Rodman, N.Y.) posted a single game high eight goals and added an assist for nine points Thursday night as she led the visiting Morrisville State women's lacrosse team to a conference win over Keuka.
  • Both teams entered the contest with a lot on the line, as each held an undefeated North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) record to date, and Keuka an unblemished record overall.
  • Morrisville State set the tone early, and often, netting the first tally of the night on an unassisted goal from senior attack Celia Abbott (Shortsville, N.Y.), who moments later connected with freshman Grace Hanehan (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) for an early 2-0 lead.
  • After a second Hanehan score, Cavellier rattled off two straight before senior Jillian Hughes (Brookfield, N.Y.) added one of her own for a 6-0 Mustang advantage.
  • Sydney Bloom put the hosts on the board at the16:42 mark, but Morrisville State with the lethal combination in its offensive unit, rattled off three more scores, extending their lead to eight with just over nine minutes to play in the opening half.
  • Bloom notched a second score at 8:10, but Morrisville State's Chelsea McNeal (Ithaca, N.Y.) collected one in the final minute before the break to give the Mustangs a 10-2 lead at half.
  • The Mustangs continued to stun the Wolves in the second, dominating play, while they increased their lead to 18 until the final minute of play when Kendall Neuberger notched the final host tally on the free position.
  • Morrisville State went on a 10-0 run before Keuka was able to break through, including five additional scores from the senior captain, Cavellier.
  • Keuka, who has averaged 22.73 goals per game to date on the season and 19.91 draw controls to date, was no match for the Mustangs who held the hosts to their lowest goal total to date. In fact, the lone team to contain the Wolves to single digits, while also limiting Keuka to just four draw control wins as Morrisville State held the significant 20-4 advantage.
  • Cavellier pulled in 10 of those starts, while Lauren McGreal (Pawling, N.Y.) added six more draw control wins to the Mustang totals.
  • Abbott had a solid outing for the Mustangs, netting two while dishing out three assists, but also recording three caused turnovers as Keuka struggled in their transition game.
  • McNeal finished with four goals and an assist for the visitors, while Hanehan collected the hat trick behind her three tallies.
  • Kadi Bice (Lorraine, N.Y.) picked up the win in net, recording seven saves to keep the Mustangs undefeated in conference play and improve their record to 7-0, 10-4 on the season.

  • Morrisville State returns to the field Saturday, traveling to D'Youville College for a 9 a.m. NEAC match against the conference newcomers. They wrap up their home schedule on Tuesday against Oswego, before concluding the regular season at SUNY Poly on the 27th.
