Capron leads Morrisville State women to 2-1 victory over Canton

CANTON, N.Y. – Freshman Ashley Capron (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) scored twice to lead the visiting Morrisville State College women's soccer team to their first victory of the 2016 season, as they downed host SUNY Canton 2-1 Saturday afternoon in Canton.

The win lifts the Mustangs to 1-1, and gives Coach Amanda Fancher her first career victory as head coach.

Capron gave Morrisville State their first lead of the day, posting the unassisted score in the 38th minute on a cut back to ball.

The Mustangs held on to the one goal advantage until the 62nd minute, when Kristina DeNardo buried the punt by Roos keeper Allison Wakefield, to tie the contest at one.

The tie was short lived, however, as Capron collected a loose ball in the box and posted her second score of the game, and third of the season, to regain the lead for the visitors at the 68:57 mark.

Morrisville State out shot Canton 14-12 and had a strong game from keeper Angela Marriott (Peekskill, N.Y.) who registered the win in net, making six saves on the day.

Wakefield made recorded six stops in the loss, playing 83 minutes in net for the Roos.

The Mustangs return to the field Saturday, hosting SUNY Polytechnic at 1 p.m. on Drake Field in Morrisville in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action.
