Morrisville State women suffer heartbreaking overtime loss to SUNY Poly

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss Saturday afternoon, falling by a 3-2 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) final to visiting SUNY Polytechnic in overtime on Drake Field in Morrisville.

The loss drops the Mustangs to 1-2 overall, 0-1 in conference play, while SUNY Poly improves to 3-0-1 overall and capture their first win in NEAC action.

SUNY Poly took the early 1-0 lead on a quick score from Nakeya Stedman just 3:30 into the contest, taking advantage of a defensive turnover by the Mustangs, before extending that to a 2-0 game on a second tally from Brittany Waterbury seven minutes later.

Waterbury was fed the ball in the center of the field before breaking away from the Morrisville State defensive line for a score in the 11th minute.

The Mustangs were able to break through the Poly defense in the 21st minute as Jessica Adams (Avoca, N.Y.) beat Wildcat keeper Angela Bartlett for the score, and her first collegiate tally.

Ashley Capron (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) had a chance to tie the game at two straight tout of the gates in the second, but Bartlett knocked the ball over the cross bar to maintain the one goal advantage.

Minutes later, Adams won the battle in a rundown of a loose ball off the hands of Bartlett to notch her second score of the day, tying the contest at two with Poly at the 49:07 mark.

Morrisville State keeper Angela Marriott (Peekskill, N.Y.) made a point blank save with 26 minutes remaining in the second the Wildcats scoreless in the second half, adding to four other stops across the period, to force the overtime frame.

The Mustangs had a great opportunity in the first minute of the extra frame, as Poly committed a foul right outside the box, but the shot sailed high over the crossbar.

SUNY Poly regained possession and in the 92nd minute, Stedman posted her second score of the day on a chip into the lower left of the net for the win.

Marriott finished the contest with eight saves in the loss. Bartlett posted nine.

Morrisville State returns to the field tomorrow, traveling to SUNY Cobleskill for a 12 p.m. start.
