COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College women's soccer team posted their first North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) victory Sunday afternoon of the 2016 season, topping host SUNY Cobleskill by a 4-2 final in Cobleskill.
The win pulls the Mustangs even at 2-2 overall, and 1-1 in NEAC play. Cobleskill drops to 1-3 on the year, 0-2 in conference action.
Morrisville State got the ball rolling at the 14:32 mark, as freshman Ashley Capron (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) had a breakaway and scored the first Mustang goal from 25 yards out igniting a three goal offensive flurry.
Less than two minutes later, Kelly Brennan (Sauquoit, N.Y.) beat Cobleskill keeper Samantha Springstead in a one on one for the 2-0 Mustang lead, before Jullian Hughes (Brookfield, N.Y.) intercepted a pass and beat Springstead for the three goal advantage for the hosts.
Cobleskill was able to answer the Mustang offensive blast, nothing one of their one at 36:55 to send the game into the break with a 3-1 visitor lead.
In the second, Capron notched her second, intercepting the ball and blasting one into the back of the net from about 30 yards out in the 57th minute.
Cobleskill was able to put another tally up on the scoreboard, registering an own goal as time wound down in the contest.
Brianna Sorriento (Wynantskill, N.Y.) recorded the win for the Mustangs, saving a game total seven, including four in the second half.
Springstead finished with 13 saves in the loss, as Morrisville State outshot the hosts a total 24 to 11, 17-9 in shots on net.
Morrisville State hits the road Wednesday for a non-conference matchup with Southern Vermont College, before returning to Drake Field for a weekend double-header. Saturday they host Lancaster Bible at noon, following with Penn St. Berks on Sunday.
