Morrisville State women drop heartbreaking double overtime loss to Abington

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 double overtime loss Saturday afternoon to visiting Penn St. Abington in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action in Morrisville, as the Nittany Lions buried the game winner with one second remaining in the extra time.

The loss drops Morrisville State to 3-7-1 overall, 2-6-0. Abington improves to 8-4-0, 7-2-0 in conference play.

Abington took the early 1-0 lead six minutes into the contest as Haley Miller collected the ball off an Angela Marriott (Peekskill, N.Y.) save for the scoring chip just under the cross bar.

Morrisville State picked up the intensity in the second half and was able to pose a threat to the Abington defense early on.

With 38 minutes showing on the clock, Kelly Brennan (Sauquoit, N.Y.) broke through the defense for a one-on-one with the Abington keeper, but Samantha Friend was able to cut off the angle keeping the Mustangs at bay.

Minutes later, Brennan again got past the defensive line untouched and had a one-on-one with Friend, but her shot sailed just over the crossbar.

In the 74th minute, Jessica Adam (Avoca, N.Y.) generated a fast break opportunity for the Mustangs from the defensive end, chipping the ball up field to a wide open Ashley Capron (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) who snuck behind the defense for the two-touch scoring shot, tying the game at one.

Abington threatened late in the contest to put the game away, but Marriott posted back to back thrilling saves to force the extra time.

In the first overtime period, Janet Hanehan (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) gathered the ball with just over three minutes to go off a missed clear attempt for a shot, but Friend turned it away to keep the Mustangs off the board and force a second overtime frame.

With four minutes to go in the second extra frame, Marriott extended her hand to block a rebound shot from Michelle Latronica to force the corner that was cleared by the defensive unit.

In the closing seconds of the contest, Abington's Latronica lined up for a corner kick and found a wide open Greta Sheridan for an uncontested header in front of net for the game winning tally with just one second remaining.

Marriott finished with nine saves in the loss.

Friend posted the win as she registered six stops.
