Southern Vermont posts shut out win over Mustang women

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Visiting Southern Vermont College scored twice in the opening half en route to a 2-0 non-conference decision over host Morrisville State College women's soccer Wednesday afternoon in Morrisville.

The loss drops Morrisville State to 2-7-0 overall.

The Mountaineers had a chance to put one on the board early, getting behind the Mustang defensive line for a one versus goalkeeper breakaway, but Morrisville State keep, Brooke Terrier (Hubbardsville, N.Y.) made the stop on the right post to keep the visitors scoreless.

In similar fashion, Southern Vermont had two straight breakaways that were stopped short by Terrier, but finally broke through in the 25th minute as Jayne Wierzbicki got behind the Mustang line for a second straight time and directed the ball inside far post for the 1-0 lead.

Morrisville State had the chance to even the score with 8:14 to go in the half, but the one-timer at the face of the goal was directed right at the Mountaineers goalkeeper, Melissa Mascari, who made the save.

Southern Vermont extended their lead at the 37:20 mark as a costly foul within the box resulted in a penalty kick conversion for the visitors, and a two goal lead.

The Mustangs had an opportunity to get one on the board with just over 11 minutes remaining in the second half, but Mascari got a fist on the ball to redirect it over the cross bar, preserving the shut out.

Terrier made eight saves in the loss for the Mustangs. Mascari picks up her sixth win of the season, making four stops.

Morrisville State returns to the field Saturday, hosting North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) defending champion Penn St. Berks at 3 p.m.
