MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Host Morrisville State College women's soccer battled back from a one goal deficit at the half, and through two overtime periods, before playing to a two goal draw with visiting Penn College of Technology Saturday afternoon on Drake Field in Morrisville.
The tie is the first for the Mustangs on the season, who enter their final home contest with an overall 3-8-1 record, 3-2-1 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) stint. Morrisville State, who has four conference games remaining on the season, returns to the field Tuesday, hosting SUNY Cobleskill in their home finale at 6 p.m. on Drake Field in Morrisville.
Penn College's Ashley Donat led all scorers on the day, collecting two tallies, including the lone goal of the opening half. Donat collected the deflection off Morrisville State keeper, Brianna Sorriento (Wynantskill, N.Y.) for the 1-0 visitor lead in the 35th minute.
Morrisville State was able to even the score in the 54th minute as Kelly Brennan (Sauquoit, N.Y.) dribbled the ball into the box and set the ball towards net, where Wildcat keeper Taylor Gonzalez couldn't control the ball and Jessica McGee (Lebanon, Conn.) was there for the cleanup score, evening the game at one.
Within minutes, Morrisville State took the 2-1 lead as Brennan nudged the ball to keep it in play, sending it off the hands of Gonzalez and over the goal line for the one goal advantage at the 62:06 mark.
That lead stood until the 78:06 mark when Donat posted her second of the day, a challenge with Sorriento just outside the right post that deflected off her hands and into the net to tie the contest at two.
Penn was persistent in their offensive attack on net in the final minutes of regulation, but the Mustang defense was able to keep them off the board, including a point-blank save by Sorriento, to force the overtime period.
Early on in the first of the two extra frames, Donat had a breakaway to go one versus goalie, but Sorriento got a hand on the ball to send it up and over the cross bar, giving Penn College the corner kick opportunity.
Chrissy Webber got a head on the kick, but again, the Mustang defense was there to block the shot and keep the Wildcats from posting the go ahead tally.
Despite additional opportunities in the second overtime period, neither team could find the back of the net, as they settled for the 2-2 draw.
Sorriento finished with 17 saves, as Penn College held the 33-13 advantage in shots over the Mustangs on the day.
Gonzalez registered four stops in the tie.
