Morrisville State women open season with thrilling overtime victory

GORHAM, ME – Morrisville State women's soccer opened the 2018 season Friday afternoon with a thrilling overtime victory over Thomas (ME) in the first round of the Southern Maine University tournament, held in Gorham, Maine.

Both teams played to a scoreless tie until the 69th minute when Thomas broke through the Mustang defense and posted the game's first tally. Katherine Hoving carried the ball down the left hand side of the field and beat two defenders as she buried the ball into the back of the net past relief keeper Lydia Young (Cuyler, N.Y.).

Maintaining the 1-0 advantage, Morrisville State was able to net the equalizing score in the 82nd minute off an unassisted goal from sophomore Jade Shimer (Canastota, N.Y.), forcing the overtime period.

Thomas, who had 10 second half shots, was held scoreless for the remainder of the contest, as Young turned away three in their attempt to post the winner.

Starting keeper Brianna Sorriento (Wynantskill, N.Y.) returned to net for the extra frame. Sorriento collected the win in net, after posting two saves in the opening half.

In the 100th minute, freshman Angelina Rinaldi (Huntington Station, N.Y.) served the ball over the top of the defense and sophomore Shay Franklin (North Norwich, N.Y.) ran onto the ball, rifling the game winning tally past the Thomas keeper on the left.
