Morrisville Splits Day 2 at MIT Tourney, Top Suffolk but fall to Babson

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Volleyball team split the second day of the MIT tournament, defeating Suffolk 3-0 in their morning contest, but fell in three sets to Babson.

The Mustangs rode a balanced offensive attack and a strong serve game to the morning win over Suffolk.  The setting tandem of Kim Dunkleman (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Helena Hanes (Brockport, Pa.) tallied 34 of the team's 39 assists.

While no Morrisville player tallied double digits in kills, nine Mustangs contributed at least one kill to the attack.  Amelia Baratier (Liverpool, N.Y.) led the way with nine kills, followed by Megyan Merrill (Millport, N.Y.) and Kirsten Florio (Wellsboro, Pa.) who added eight and seven respectively.

Unfortunately, the last match of the MIT tournament did not go the Mustangs way despite playing Babson neck and neck throughout the three sets.

Morrisville used another balanced attack to push Babson in each set, pushing them past the 25 point mark in the first and third sets.  In total, the Mustangs only dropped the match by 8 total points.

Florio and Merrill notched 9 kills each in the loss.  Elycia Crittenden (Louisville, Ky.) picked up seven kills and Baratier added six.

Defensively, Sam Wolf (Liverpool, N.Y.) picked up 22 digs, while Merrill added 15.

The reigning North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Champions will now turn their attention to defending their crown as they open up conference play on Wednesday evening against Route 20 rival, Cazenovia College.  Match time is slated for 7:00 PM in the STUAC Gymnasium.
