Mustangs Stay Hot, Pick up Two Big Wins at Skidmore Invitational

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Volleyball team stayed hot on Saturday, picking up two big road non-conference victories at the Skidmore Invitational.  The Mustangs picked up the 3-1 win against the host's Skidmore College before knocking out SUNY New Paltz 3-2 in their afternoon match.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW 

  • The Mustangs and Thoroughbreds battled back and forth in the first match, splitting the first two sets.
  • However, the Mustangs pulled away in the third and fourth sets behind a strong offensive attack which featured a .366 team hitting percentage in the fourth set.
  • Megyan Merrill (Millport, N.Y.) came one kill shy of the 20 kill mark, posting 19 in the win.
  • The Mustangs avenged an earlier season loss to SUNY New Paltz in the second match of the day defeating the Hawks 3-2 behind a 23 kill effort from Merrill.
  • Sam Wolf (Liverpool, N.Y.) came up big defensively for the Mustangs once again, picking up 33 digs.
  • A double-double by Helena Hanes (Brockport, Pa.) also gave Morrisville a boost in the second match as the senior setter/outside hitter posted 10 kills and 18 assists.
  • For their efforts over the weekend, Merrill and Wolf were named to the All-Tournament team.  In addition, Merrill was named the Skidmore Invitational Most Valuable Player. 

WHAT'S NEXT 

The Mustangs will use this weekend's momentum to propel them into the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament this upcoming weekend.  The NEAC office will release a full announcement regarding the tournament and seeding this weekend.
