MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) office announced its final athletes of the week selections in the sport of women's volleyball, naming Morrisville State duo Megyan Merrill (Millport, N.Y.) and Samantha Wolf (Liverpool, N.Y.) the Players of the Week for the week ending Oc.t 28.
Merrill led Morrisville State to a week sweep that included tough outside competition from Union, Skidmore and New Paltz at the Skidmore tournament on the weekend and the Mustangs final conference contest of the regular season.
The junior began her week with nine kills in the 3-0 match win over NEAC opponent Cobleskill, hitting .533, while adding four aces and four digs to her tallies. She averaged 3.0 kills per set to give the Mustangs an undefeated 11-0 NEAC record and secure the top seed in the conference tournament.
Merrill was also a dominant force on the weekend as the Mustangs wrapped up their season at the Skidmore tourney. She collected 12 kills in a 3-0 match win over Union on Friday night, averaging 4.0 kills per set, while adding three aces and 12 digs to her tallies.
On Saturday she followed with 19 throw downs against the hosts in a 3-1 match win, averaging 4.75 kills per set, and adding another ace and 13 digs. Saturday afternoon Merrill wrapped up her week play with 23 kills in the thrilling 3-2 match win over SUNY New Paltz (a team that is 8-1 in SUNYAC play) to average 4.60 kills per set, while serving up five aces and adding 13 digs and an assisted block to the 4-0 week sweep. Her play earned her tournament Most Valuable Player honors as recognized by competing coaches from the Liberty League and SUNYAC conferences.
On the week the junior averaged 4.20 kills per set, hit .265, averaged .87 aces per set, and 2.80 digs, while boasting an average 5.1 points per set.
Merrill is a graduate of Horseheads High and is majoring in applied psychology at SUNY Morrisville. She is the daughter of Melissa and Doug Merrill of Millport.
Wolf led Morrisville State defensively in a 4-0 week that included a sweep of NEAC opponents with a 3-0 match win over Cobleskill Wednesday to give the Mustangs the regular season title, secure the top seed in the NEAC tournament, and go undefeated at 11-0.
She began the week with 14 digs in the win over Cobleskill where she averaged 4.67 digs per set, adding an ace to her tallies.
Wolf followed with 27 digs against Union College Friday night in the first round of the Skidmore tourney, averaging 9.0 digs per set in the 3-0 win over the Liberty League opponent, while adding eight assists in the contest.
Saturday Wolf added to her week totals with 21 digs against host Skidmore in the 3-1 match win, adding another dive assists and an ace, while averaging 5.25 digs per set. She wrapped up the week with a high 33 digs in the thrilling 3-2 match win over New Paltz, adding an ace and three more assists to her tallies as she averaged 6.60 digs per set.
Across the week Wolf averaged 6.33 digs per set after collecting a week total 95, while contributing .20 aces and 1.13 assists per set.
The graduate of Liverpool High is majoring in business administration at SUNY Morrisville. She is the daughter of Julie and Tom Wolf of Liverpool.
